In support of IMO’s 2019
efforts, ‘Empowering Women in the Maritime Community’, and as a company that
employs hundreds of women globally, Columbia launched the CSM TogetHER
initiative on International Women’s Day.
To kick-start this campaign, Columbia Cyprus invited the President of WISTA International, Ms. Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou, to give a staff talk on ‘Women in Shipping’ on 31st May 2019. Ms. Anna Vourgos, President of WISTA Cyprus was also in attendance.
The long-term action plan includes the creation of a Women’s Mentorship Programme, Unconscious Bias training and a number of WISTA memberships for staff. Core teams have been set up throughout the Cyprus, Germany and Singapore offices for a joint approach to supporting female talent.
After the staff talk, Ms. Theodosiou commented: “‘WISTA International commends initiatives whose purpose is to advance the ideals of diversity and inclusion, and contribute to a merit-based business environment. Diverse thoughts, skill sets and approaches are the only way to move into the future in a rapidly changing industry.”
Mark O’Neil, President of Columbia Shipmanagement, concluded: “At Columbia we recognise the specific skill sets of each person and want to empower those persons to apply their skills in a diverse environment of equal opportunity.”
